Uttarkashi is sprawled over an area of 8,016 sq km in the rugged terrain of the Himalayas. It is a beautiful hill district that lies at an elevation of 1,158 m above sea level. The word ‘Uttrakashi’ means ‘kashi of the north’ and the place is revered almost as much as the ‘kashi of the plains’–Varanasi. Just like Varanasi, Uttarkashi is also located on the banks of Ganga river (Bhagirathi). Besides enjoying a close proximity to major religious centres of Yamunotri and Gangotri, it is home to many beautiful temples. The most famous is the temple dedicated to Lord Vishwanath (an avatar of Lord Shiva), just 100 m from the local bus stand.
