Shivakhola Adventure Camp

Shivakhola Adventure Camp is a tranquil riverside retreat located within the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, approximately 27 kilometers from Siliguri. Nestled among lush tea gardens and beside a river named after a renowned Shiva temple, Shivakhola offers a serene escape. Visitors can reach the camp via the Heritage Toy Train, which departs from Siliguri at 9:30 am and arrives at Rongtong Railway Station by 11:00 am; from there, it’s a 10-kilometer journey through tea gardens to the camp. Alternatively, a direct route from NJP or Bagdogra Airport takes about an hour. Its proximity to these transport hubs makes it convenient for visitors with late arrivals or early departures to stay for the first or last night of their trip.

Nearby attractions include Latpanchar, a charming village at 4,200 feet known for its stunning views of the Kanchenjunga peaks and excellent birdwatching opportunities. Latpanchar is 25 kilometers from Shivakhola, with the helipad ground and viewpoint located just 4 kilometers away. The Maldiram sunrise viewpoint is 15 kilometers from the camp, and the Nurbong tea factory and Shiva temple are a mere 100 meters away. The camp itself is situated on a secluded riverbed, with a small village and a secondary school named after the Indian National Army of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on the opposite bank. Darjeeling is about a two-hour drive, while Mirik is accessible within 1.5 hours.

Accommodation options include two double-bed bamboo cottages with attached bathrooms and three luxury resort tents with attached toilets and changing rooms. Additional camping tents can be arranged for school groups if needed. The camp is ideal for educational groups, corporate outings, and birdwatchers. Rare species such as the Rufous-necked Hornbill can be observed in the nearby Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, and a variety of common birds, including yuhinas, scaly thrushes, woodpeckers, and kingfishers, can be seen. The camp also offers a range of rope, rock, and river activities tailored to guests’ needs. Given its convenient location near the railway station and airport, Shivakhola is an excellent starting or ending point for any itinerary.
